Speaker Night 2022-11-08: “212°: The Extra Degree” – Doug Mattice

Thursday, 08 September 2022, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom meeting

Summer may be coming to an end, but this program is going to be HOT!

In this program, Fine Art Photographer Doug Mattice will take you along on a photo shoot at Burnside Farms. He will explain the importance of having a vision and why that’s more important than worrying about the “rules” of photography.

You will discover:

  • Why you should always strive to make the extra effort when taking photographs.
  • That little adjustments when shooting can make a huge difference in your photography. 211 degrees (images taken straight from the camera) can serve a purpose – if you are documenting a scene. However, success as a photographer requires additional effort to process those images in post-production so you can fully tell your story and reach the 212° threshold that separates you from other photographers.
  • Applying additional heat (effort) to whatever task or activity, you undertake as a photographer will help you achieve the primary objective (a successful shoot). As you develop this skill, you can also expect to experience higher print sales and reap exponential awards like print competition ribbons that are possible by applying that “one” extra degree of effort.

Doug Mattice is a photographer/educator and business coach to serious photographers who want to build a lucrative photography business.

He acquired his business experience by operating a part-time portrait studio from his home for over 35 years. He received his Craftsman Degree from the Professional Photographers of America and has continued to hone his craft by studying with some of the most successful photographers across the country.

Through personal coaching, training, and workshops, he helps photographers like you build, market, and monetize their business better than ever before.

Peer Critique – 2022-05-12; Theme – Open; Facilitator – John Tabor

Thursday, May 12, 2022, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom meeting

Thinking Woman

LPC’s facilitator for this evening is John Tabor.

Topic: Open

Peer critique returns! 🙂

The goal of this event is to improve everybody’s photography with constructive feedback in a friendly, non-competitive environment. Upload up to two of your images to this dedicated gallery by 12pm, Thursday, 12 May, then join us Thursday evening at 7p for review of and comments on images.

This is not a competition and paid membership is not required for this event. This is an opportunity to ask questions on composition, editing, and other perspectives about your images – and to offer your opinions on other images. Images are treated anonymously by the facilitator, though you may certainly speak up with any specific questions or desired feedback about your images from the other participants.

John will be using Lightroom for this event and you’ll see live edits based on audience feedback during the event.

The following 12 guidelines are common considerations by judges. Not all of these will be covered for each image in this critique and they are listed here so you have an idea of what questions to ask about your own images – and to prompt some ideas for your own feedback on the various images presented.

1. Impact is the sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. There can be impact in any of these twelve elements.
2. Technical excellence is the print quality of the image itself as it is presented for viewing. Retouching, manipulation, sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting, and correct color are some items that speak to the qualities of the physical print.
3. Creativity is the original, fresh, and external expression of the imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought.
4. Style is defined in a number of ways as it applies to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or it can have a negative effect when they are at odds.
5. Composition is important to the design of an image, bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker.
6. Presentation affects an image by giving it a finished look. The mats and borders used, either physical or digital, should support and enhance the image, not distract from it.
7. Color Balance supplies harmony to an image. An image in which the tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect.
8. Center of Interest is the point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest.
9. Lighting —the use and control of light—refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image. Whether the light applied to an image is manmade or natural, proper use of it should enhance an image.
10. Subject Matter should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image.
11. Technique is the approach used to create the image. Printing, lighting, posing, capture, presentation media, and more are part of the technique applied to an image.
12. Story Telling refers to the image’s ability to evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image.

Competition Night 2022-04-28: Theme – Abstract; Judge – Lori Lankford

Thursday, April 28, 2022, 7 PM – 9 PM
*** Zoom meeting ONLY ***
How to submit images

Theme: Abstract
Theme Description: Photo in which the portrayal of things from the visible world plays little or no part.
Judge: Lori Lankford

Lori grew up near the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, spent 10 years in Texas, and once again calls Virginia home. Her passion for photography began as a way to capture her personal travel adventures. Living in and traveling west for many years, she fell in love with photographing the vast landscapes and wide-open skies. She tries to spend as many days as possible capturing a sunrise, chasing light through a forest, or watching the sun as it sets over the ocean.

Her recent work in macro photography has been a surprise addition to her photographic journey. To escape so deeply into the details of a tiny object turns off the world for a few moments.

She is proud to have her work exhibited in several galleries across the U.S. and to teach local macro workshops.

Her goal as a photographer and in life is to continue learning and growing. She always tries to capture the expected in unexpected ways and to embrace the light and the shadows.

Speaker Night 2022-04-14: “Yellowstone in the Winter” – Stanley Bysshe

Thursday, April 14, 2022, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom meeting

Stan’s photographic journey started in the 1960s with a hand me down Nikkormat. But because of his love for scuba diving and marine tropical reef ecology, his equipment and images became dedicated to underwater nature. By 2010 it was time to hang up the fins and, when he joined Northern Virginia Photographic Society, Stan was exposed to a whole new world of land-based photography. Still, nature remained a driving force behind his images.

At NVPS, Stan has served on multiple committees and is a Past President. He has given multiple talks to the club and to several local photo clubs as well. In the past, he enjoyed teaching underwater photography, but over the past six years, he has helped lead photo tours to Florida, New Mexico, Washington State, Alaska, and Yellowstone National Park. Of his fourteen trips to Yellowstone, five have been during the winter, including this past January. The winter season rapidly became his favorite time of the year to visit the park. While this is by far and away the most challenging season to be in Yellowstone, it can be the most rewarding.

On this night, Stan will talk about why Yellowstone in the winter is such a magical place, how and where you can get the best images, some techniques for shooting in the winter, and how to try and stay warm in a region that routinely records the lowest temperatures in the lower forty eight States.

*** Zoom meeting ONLY ***
Submission details

Theme: Street Photography/Street Scenes
Theme Description: Photography that records everyday life in a public place.

Judge: Roy Sewall
Roy is a semi-retired professional photographer based in Bethesda, Maryland, adjacent to Washington, DC.

Roy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world.

From 2001 to 2009 Roy concentrated on capturing scenes of the Potomac River and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. He then developed diverse bodies of work that include foreign and domestic destinations, architecture and design, people, nature, old places and things, and abstracts. He then moved on to a project called “Mysterra” – illusions that convey fantasy, whimsy, and spirits. Today Roy’s interests are quite broad.

Roy has done extensive work for private and commercial clients, as well as Potomac River and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations.

Roy considers the ultimate destination for a photograph to be a large fine art print, 12″ x 18″ or larger. He has exhibited in numerous DC-area groups and one-person shows, as well as in his own studio.

Theme: Doors & Windows
Theme Description: Photo incorporating one or more doors or windows as a prominent element of the composition.

Judge: Erum Rizvi

From Erum’s site:
I was born and raised in Manchester, UK. Photography has become an integral facet of my transition to the States. I find that my British quirkiness, laid back attitude and unique sense of style has helped me establish myself as Washington D.C.’s leading South Asian Wedding Photographer.

Being a lover of light and color, it was inevitable that I would become a Wedding photographer. My vibrant Pakistani roots have allowed me to seamlessly blend into a crowd and capture the spontaneity of the ceremony. The ability to create clean, rich, bold, saturated images with a timeless quality is my forte. The combination of my images and their desire for something different attracts my clients and establishes an immediate connection that resonates throughout their experience.

Light and color constantly dance around me and I find a need to capture both with great frequency

Speaker Night 2021-11-11: Geff Bourke – The Beauty of Africa

Thursday, November 11, 2021, 7 PM – 9 PM
*** Zoom meeting ONLY ***

LPC’s speaker for this evening is Geff Bourke.

Topic: The Beauty of Africa

Detail:
Photography has been a passion of Geff’s for over 40 years. Like most people, Geff started taking pictures of his vacations and of his family, with his very first camera, a Fuji XT605.

Geff definitely caught the photography bug and his interests branched out from family vacations to nature photography, such as landscapes, birds, and flowers; travel photography with the goal of capturing the culture of his destinations; and urban landscapes… street, people, and decay.

Since Geff started with film, he was compelled to learn every aspect of development and at one point had built his own darkroom so that he could process his images. Geff has, like many, converted to the digital format. For his nature photography, he is a purist… and uses post-processing software at a minimum. For all other subject matters, digital photography allows such a limitless freedom of expression. Each image can be manipulated in multiple ways to express a desired mood or state of mind. Although he doesn’t have his original camera, he does have a collection of antique cameras and often shoots film which he processes at home and then transfers to a digital image.

In college, he studied and obtained a degree in graphic arts. These studies aided him in developing perspective and have definitely impacted how he composes and processes his images. His work is a true expression of how he sees the world.

Geff has also been featured in the UK’s Black + White Magazine for his amazing B&W work of Icelandic horses and has been awarded and published in Minimalist Photography Awards, Annual Book 2020.

Tonight he’ll be discussing his experiences in Africa.

Competition Night 2021-09-23: Theme – What I Did This Summer; Judge – Jean-Pierre Plé

Thursday, September 23, 2021, 7 PM – 9 PM
Studio 151, 44330 Mercure Cir, Sterling, VA 20166
Zoom meeting
Submission details shown below.

Theme: What I Did This Summer
Theme Description: Open theme. The photo must have been captured in June, July, or August 2021.

Judge: Jean-Pierre Plé

Jean-Pierre is a fine art photographer who embraces the concept that photography gives us a chance to see ourselves, to see our emotions, and maybe to see something about ourselves that we have never seen before or we were not able to give voice to. He is drawn to making images where a strong visual and emotional message is formed by shapes, lines, or contrast in color or tones.

His photographs have transitioned from an original interest in nature, landscapes, abstracts and architecture, to a current focus on a contemplative approach to photography, which often depicts his subjects in a non-representational manner. Sensing a deep desire for photographers to experience greater meaning in their work, he developed a workshop exploring a contemplative and mindful approach to photography. While he employs DSLR, mirrorless and iPhone cameras, he is also a recovering large format film artist and misses the slow, methodical, and mechanical components of large format.

He is a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club.
