Field Trip: Kenilworth Gardens

FIELD TRIP
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
SAT, 7/19
Meet at 6:15AM @ Herndon Monroe Park & Ride
MAP (to carpool) OR
Meet at 7AM @ Kenilworth

Herndon Monroe Park & Ride is Exit 11 off the Dulles Greenway. It’s also very close to the intersection of Fairfax Co. Parkway and Sunset Hills. Map The really nice thing about this place is it’s always empty on a the weekends. We park on the ground/first floor, end closest to Fairfax Co. Parkway (NorthEast corner).

This is the place Kristen talked about was at peak and sent out pictures last weekend. See her pix here: http://web.mac.com/kristenstaples1/Kristens_Photo_Site/Kenilworth.html

Hope everyone can join us! Make sure to bring water or something cool to drink for afterwards. The nice thing about Kenilworth is it’s a short walk (like 150 feet) from parking to the gardens/ponds. Then within the park most of the great stuff is right there. So it’s very easy to get around, even with tripod and camera and such. 🙂

May Competition Winners

Our May open competition was a grand success! We had many entries and lots of winners. View results

Our judge, Ian Plant, did a wonderful job and will definitely be asked to judge for us again. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time for all of the critique, so next year, with our new meeting place’s longer hours, will be even better.

    Welcome Newcomers!

We had a huge interest in our club at Meadowlark! For those of you checking us out for the first time (or after a long time away), welcome! Some tips – first, make sure to join our Yahoo Group. There’s lots of good info on our list, including reminders and meeting updates and impromptu field trips, not to mention some great discussions. Second, check out our calendar (you’ll see it to the right) or our Meetings page. You’ll find updated information about upcoming meetings. For those of you using iCal on the Mac or Google calendar, you can also subscribe to our calendar (for those of you wondering, that’s what the little icon above the calendar that looks like lines does.)

    Again, welcome!

    HDR with Shelley

As always, Shelley gave us a wonderful talk this month! High Dynamic Range photography is really fascinating. For those who are interested, the tool she used is called Photomatix and you can check it out and download a trial or purchase ($99US) from their site, http://www.hdrsoft.com/

Many thanks again to Shelley for giving us such an enlightening talk.

    February

Due to problems booking our normal meeting place, we’ll be meeting on TUESDAYS this month only. For those of you who have been members of the club for a while, you’ll recognize this as our old meeting day. So I hope we see some of you old-timers who haven’t been able to make it for a while. 😉

Also note that Meadowlark is this month, in fact Feb 9-10, with the keynote by Frans Lanting Feb 8. Please buy tix to the keynote and more online beforehand to ensure you get a seat – http://www.meadowlarkphotoexpo.org

Check the calendar regularly and our Yahoo! Groups mailing list for updates. We will announce the location of the macro meeting shortly.

    January Speaker Update

    Book cover
We’re so lucky, we have two speakers who wanted to talk to us in January! We’ve moved the nature photography talk to later in the season and instead are welcoming Roy Sewall to discuss how to produce a photography book. He will share with us his experiences from producing his newly published book of images of the Potomac. This will be a very interesting talk on what is becoming a hot topic.

    Get Ready for Meadowlark

    Meadowlark is fast approaching!

For those of you who have had photos accepted into Meadowlark, bring them for the exhibit at the Fairfax Govt Center! The hanging is Saturday at 9am at the Fairfax Govt Center. NOTE: MUST BE FRAMED, NOT SAWTOOTH hangers (use the wire hangers, easiest is to get the Neilson frames.) Questions – contact Oscar.

We will have a matting party this Saturday as well! Great for those of you who need help matting and for experts who want the extra push to get ready and to have some fun as well. See the calendar event for time and location: http://www.loudounphotoclub.com/?p=46

And don’t forget there is a great keynote on Friday night – Frans Lanting, but you must buy tickets ahead of time. Check out the meadowlark website for more info: http://www.meadowlarkphotoexpo.org/

    Meadowlark Matting Party

Get ready for Meadowlark and mat your photos! We’ll have mat boards for sale. If you have a mat cutter bring it along. If you don’t, others will bring theirs to share. If you’ve never matted before and want to learn or if you’re an expert and want to share in the fun – come and enjoy!

    Bill Conway and Panorama Photography

Many thanks Mr. Bill Conway for his excellent presentation on Panorama Photography! I think everyone took copious notes and is planning to try their hand at panorama photos. Mr. Conway has graciously agreed to give us his notes and allow us to post them online.

Many thanks again to Mr. Conway for his excellent talk and demonstration!

    Matting Workshop

Bring your photos and learn to cut your own custom mats! We will have mat boards for sale, as well as clear plastic protective bags.

If you own a mat cutter, please bring it! Along with your photos, the class goes a lot faster if people bring a ruler, a pencil and a couple sheets of scratch paper.

LOCATION: Cascades Library, Meeting Room B
    TIME: 10am – 2pm

    Exhibit of Past Meadowlark Acceptances

There will be an exhibit at the Fairfax County Government Center of previously shown Meadowlark Photo Expo images. Any image that was accepted into Meadowlark is allowed.

NOTE: Prints must be matted and framed for exhibit (using most likely the wire hangers not saw tooth hangers). Participants will probably have to hang their own images since they’ll be framed with glass.

Check back as the date approaches – we will have more info about how to submit your prints.
