LPC Speaker Night – Nov. 8, 2012 – Travel Photography: From Museums to the Outback (Tom Ramsay)

Nov. 8, 2012 – Travel Photography: From Museums to the Outback (Tom Ramsay)
Every trip can be an adventure. A museum in Paris, a game park in Africa, a conference in Sidney, or a cruise in the Caribbean:  each can provide the opportunity for new and exciting experiences and the potential to create images that capture the uniqueness of that trip.  This introductory level presentation is for photographers who want to create images that are optimally exposed and focused, while also conveying the passion, beauty, excitement, or poignancy of their experiences.
Award-winning photographer/cinematographer Tom Ramsay will present a program on travel photography. He will cover photo tips everyone should know in order to “bring a trip back alive” and share it with others.  Panoramas, composition, effectively handling extreme indoor and outdoor lighting conditions, equipment care, lens choices, and image stabilization are among the topics that will be covered.
For those interested in more in-depth study of this topic, Tom offers a 4-hour workshop, which this presentation is based on, at Art Square in Leesburg.  Tom has won more than 30 national and international production awards including the Gold Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival and the CINE Golden Eagle award.  He has photographed and directed for Time-Life’s “Wild Wild World of Animals,” Mutual of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom,” the U.S. National Park Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His films have been seen worldwide on ABC, BBC, CBS, and PBS television networks.  Tom is currently teaching photography classes at ArtSquare in Leesburg, Virginia.  A list of current classes is available on the Art Square website, www.loudounacademy.org.  Samples of Tom’s work can be seen at www.momentwithnature.com.

LPC Speaker Night – Sept 13, 2012: Mark Regan “Environmental Portraiture”

LPC Speaker Night – Sept 13, 2012: Mark Regan “Environmental Portraiture”

The LPC speaker Mark Regan will join us for dinner at Rubino’s prior to the meeting! Come out starting about 5:30 and join us! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rubinos-Pizzeria/67647085189

What is Environmental Portraiture?

Environmental portraits are portraits that are different than what you might shoot for a graduating senior or for a corporate “head and shoulder” photo session. These are mostly studio portraits and are typically shot with a simple background. The person is often the only element in the photo.

The best environmental portraits include visual information to show why that person is being photographed in that particular space. Environmental portraits can be anything from simple vacation photos to more elaborate portrait assignments that take on more of an editorial slant.

Various elements can make up a good environmental portrait. These include subject and background relationships (environment), the use of wide angle lenses and quality of light.

Who is Mark Regan?

Mark Regan is a Northern Virginia based photographer producing high quality digital images for a variety of local and national clients. For 25 years Mark has relied on his editorial background in pursuit of images that tell a “visual story.” He has the ability to shoot in a variety of conditions and works efficiently in both location and studio environments.

Mark Regan Photography is located in Reston, Virginia where he lives with his daughter. When not on assignment, Mark can usually be found with his kayak, and camera, somewhere on the Potomac River.

2012-2013 LPC Competition Season

One of the great benefits to being a member of Loudoun Photo Club is regular judged competitions.  Many members have found this to be the best method for learning and improving their own photographic skills.  Winning entries receive ribbons and accumulate points for the End-Of-Year Awards.

We are fortunate to have relationships with many professional photographers who provide open critiques of each photo entry.  They will judge based on the theme and the type/level of entry and select their favorites for the award ribbons.

You must be a paid member to enter photographs. However, LPC welcomes any and all who wish to visit and view a competition.

We usually have a dinner with the judge prior to the meeting – check the email list and this website for the latest information.

The location will also be updated via email and this website.

Location: GWU Ashburn Campus, Exploration Hall, Rm 121

o Judge: Corey Hilz, http://www.coreyhilz.com/

o An series of three nature images matted or composited together that tells a story. Images can either be composited onto a single print or be composed of three separate prints and matted using a single cover mat with three openings. If the images are on a single print, it must be clear where one photograph ends and the other begins.

o For this contest, a “nature image” is defined as an image where there are no man-made objects, or they are a very minor part of the scene. For example, a landscape image of with a fence forming a lovely leading line would be disqualified. However, a landscape image where a fence is in the background and is a very small portion of the entire composition would be acceptable.

o For this contest, the maximum size of finished, matted, triptych is 16 inches high by 36 inches wide.

o Members will be restricted to a single color and a single monochrome triptych

o If there is sufficient interest, the club will consider hosting a matting party a week or so prior to the competition to help members with the presentation.
