September 22, 2011: LPC Competition – Portrait
Wikipedia definition of ‘portrait’:
“A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic
representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is
predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and
even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a
portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a
person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking
directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most
successfully engage the subject with the viewer.”
Award-winning photographer/cinematographer Tom Ramsay will present a program on nature photography, based on the production he and his wife Nancy Goetzinger have completed on North America’s Atlantic coastline. Tom’s presentation will cover many photographic techniques he and Nancy used to capture the beauty of coastal habitats and the diversity of resulting life forms that exist on the East Coast shoreline.
His presentation will be visualized both with demonstrations of camera equipment used in the production and with images of the diversity of landscapes from Georgia to Newfoundland; nesting and migrating birds; sea mammals; and other edge-of-the-sea and undersea life.
Tom has won more than 30 national and international production awards including the Gold Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival and the CINE Golden Eagle award. He has photographed and directed for Time-Life’s “Wild Wild World of Animals,” Mutual of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom,” the U.S. National Park Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His films have been seen worldwide on ABC, BBC, CBS, and PBS television networks. Tom is currently teaching photography classes at ArtSquare in Leesburg, Virginia. A list of current classes is available on the Art Square website, www.loudounacademy.org. Samples of Nancy and Tom’s work can be seen at www.momentwithnature.com.

News from LPC’s Competition Coordinator, Tim Pennington:
LPC,
I finally was able to get all the contest judge slots filled for this year’s competition schedule. I have attached the schedule and revised rules. The only change to the rules is that I increased the number of points a person must earn to be promoted from 50 to 75. Members may always voluntarily self-promote themselves if they wish.
Next year’s schedule, in summary, is:
I included descriptions of each category and the judges’ website in the attached file.
Happy Shooting,
Tim Pennington
