Competition Night 2021-09-23: Theme – What I Did This Summer; Judge – Jean-Pierre Plé

Thursday, September 23, 2021, 7 PM – 9 PM
Studio 151, 44330 Mercure Cir, Sterling, VA 20166
Zoom meeting
Submission details shown below.

Theme: What I Did This Summer
Theme Description: Open theme. The photo must have been captured in June, July, or August 2021.

Judge: Jean-Pierre Plé

Jean-Pierre is a fine art photographer who embraces the concept that photography gives us a chance to see ourselves, to see our emotions, and maybe to see something about ourselves that we have never seen before or we were not able to give voice to. He is drawn to making images where a strong visual and emotional message is formed by shapes, lines, or contrast in color or tones.

His photographs have transitioned from an original interest in nature, landscapes, abstracts and architecture, to a current focus on a contemplative approach to photography, which often depicts his subjects in a non-representational manner. Sensing a deep desire for photographers to experience greater meaning in their work, he developed a workshop exploring a contemplative and mindful approach to photography. While he employs DSLR, mirrorless and iPhone cameras, he is also a recovering large format film artist and misses the slow, methodical, and mechanical components of large format.

He is a member of the North Bethesda Camera Club. His work has been part of numerous exhibitions in the Washington, DC area, including Washington Printmakers Gallery, Waverly Street Gallery, Photoworks Gallery, Nature Visions, Herndon ArtSpace, the Joe Miller Gallery, PhotoWalk in Crystal City, Touchstone Gallery, Lowe House Building, and the Dupont Underground. His professional career is in the field of international ocean affairs and he works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

If all goes well in the weeks leading up to the meeting, she will have butterflies on hand to release at the end of her talk. Speaker Night 2021-04-08: Don Rosenberger – Light Painting

Thursday, April 8, 2021, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom meeting

LPC’s speaker for this evening is Don Rosenberger.

Topic: Light Painting and Night Photography

Speaker bio:
I started taking pictures in the mid to late 1970s as a teenager. I developed my own black and white film and really enjoyed photography, but never quite found my calling. By the time I was in my mid-twenties the expense of photography got to be too much and I stopped taking pictures. Several years later I sold all my cameras and lenses since I had not used them. During this dry period, I still had an appreciation for photography, but never felt compelled to pick up a camera.

By the time I was in my early forties, I started using digital photography for my day job and as the technology improved I started wondering if it was time to get back into photography. I first purchased a small handheld camera to see how it would go. I fell back in love with photography and the next step was to purchase a DSLR and some interchangeable lenses. This time around I was mostly drawn to landscape photography. I say mostly because I attended a flash workshop that Penn Camera hosted for Nikon Pro Joe McNally. Joe’s work was so amazing and while I continued to focus on landscape photography, I still maintained a distant desire to make images of people.

I joined a couple of camera clubs, meeting a lot of amazing photographers along the way. Some of whom I still consider mentors today.

What has been my driving passion since picking up a DSLR was the desire to improve my craft. You could call this passion, but it’s more than that. I’m always interested in how to elevate the quality of my work and I believe if this ever stops, I’ll stop growing as an artist.

As the years progressed I started arranging trips with my photo friends. This turned into co-founding Road Runner Photography Tours in 2013. Road Runner has been an amazing adventure on one hand and all-consuming one on the other. After 5 years it was time to go in a different direction.

I decided to take a portrait workshop from Kelly Schneider in 2017, and after working with Kelly for the last 2 years, I have accepted a position as tour manager on his international portrait workshops.

I love working with other photographers and plan to continue doing this via my Meetup group, occasional workshops and working with Kelly.

Follow along and let’s see where this journey goes!

Speaker Night 2021-02-11: Cindy Vasko – Urban Exploration

Thursday, February 11, 2021, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom meeting

LPC’s speaker for February 11th is Cindy Vasko.

About the speaker: “Welcome to my world and experience an environment outside of the ordinary and far removed from daily life experiences. Although I am a photographer of many genres, including landscape, event, concert, and architecture, my photographic passion rests within the classification of urban exploration, also known as abandoned site exploration.

“I was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and reside in the Washington D.C. metropolitan bounds of Arlington, Virginia. In 2009, music was the catalyst that prompted a reawakening of my photography journey. For more than four years, I interviewed musicians, wrote articles, and photographed concerts for a music magazine. In 2012, I had a visceral reaction to an urban exploration photograph of an abandoned asylum that caused an immediate shift in the motion of my photographic endeavors. My love of history, research, and writing compliment my urban exploration photography track. I am the author and photographer of thirteen books (nine completed) about urban exploration, published by Fonthill Media. Several of my images, especially my urban exploration works, were recipients of prestigious photography awards along with my works featured at gallery exhibitions in New York City, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Paris, France’s Louvre Museum.”

Competition Night 2021-01-28: Theme – Decay/Rust; Judge – Roy Sewall

Thursday, January 28, 2021, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom
Submission details shown below.

Theme: Decay/Rust
Theme Description: Artistic representation of decay. Rust, for example, is typically decaying steel. “Decay” is frequently defined as “to undergo decomposition or “to fall into ruin”.

Judge: Roy Sewall

Roy Sewall is a full-time photographer based in Bethesda, Maryland, adjacent to Washington, DC.

Roy’s interest in photography evolved from travel in six continents, yet he found his own community to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world.

Photography
From 2001 to 2009 Roy concentrated on capturing scenes of the Potomac River and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. He then developed diverse bodies of work that include foreign and domestic destinations, architecture and design, people, nature, old places and things, and abstracts. But since 2012 his foremost passion is his ongoing project called “Mysterra” – illusions that convey fantasy, whimsy, and spirits.

Roy has done extensive work for private and commercial clients, as well as Potomac River and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations.

Roy’s considers the ultimate destination for a photograph to be a large fine art print, 12″ x 18″ or larger. He has exhibited in numerous DC-area group and one-person shows, as well as in his own studio.

Books
Roy’s first photography coffee-table book, Our Potomac, from Great Falls through Washington, D.C., was published in 2005. The book led to numerous lecture and slide show engagements with local organizations, and established him as one of the leading photographers of the Potomac River and C&O Canal. His second book, Great Falls and Mather Gorge, took a magnifying glass to this extraordinary area; it was published in 2009. These are still the definitive photography books of the river and canal in the DC area.

Education
Roy offers both private and group instruction and critique to novice and intermediate photographers. In 2014, he became an instructor for the Capital Photography Center, where he offers classes and local field trips.

Roy has judged photographic competitions and has critiqued bodies of work at Maryland, DC, and Virginia camera clubs more than 70 times since 2006. He regularly does instructional programs at camera clubs and Nature Visions (Manassas, Virginia), with the most popular one being “Taking Your Photography to the Next Level.”

He has made over 40 presentations to the general public about the Potomac River and C&O Canal using photographs from his two books. He has also made presentations of photographs of China from 1901 to 1939 by his missionary grandfather Robert Fitch, to Chinese and US audiences.

In 2018, Roy was selected by the Maryland Photography Alliance to conduct their Judges Training Program, a three-session program each fall and spring.

Leadership in the Community
Roy served as the President of the North Bethesda Camera Club from 2016 to 2018. He was the first Chair of the Board of Directors of the C&O Canal Trust, and also served on the Board of Directors for the Potomac RIverkeeper Network.

About the judge:
Sandi Croan is an independent artist from Centreville who has been living in Northern Virginia since 1978. She has always looked at the world through the lens of a camera and has been taking photographs for family, friends, and her own gallery since her first “Brownie” camera. Over the past 15 years, she has gotten much more serious about landscape, nature, travel, and portrait photography. Now, she is devoting herself full-time to her photographic passion, and constantly striving to capture that special moment in time as well as the beauty, wonderment, feelings and humanity that surrounds us.

Sandi has won numerous competitions and awards for her fine art photographs. She has been juried into many shows and exhibitions. She was recently awarded Best Landscape and People’s Choice Award at the prestigious Nature Visions Photography Exposition and was honored with both Best of Show and Second place at the Meadowlark Nature Photography Expo. She has also won Versatile Photographer of the Year (Advanced), Photographer of the Year (Advanced Color Prints and Advanced Digital) and numerous Prints of the Year at Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS), as well as many competition awards. Sandi was a featured artist in Elan Magazine, and her photograph “Blue Lagoon” was on the cover. She has also had photographs published in other local and national magazines.

In addition, she has been juried into the prestigious ArtSpace Herndon Fine Art Photography Competition, George W. Glennie International Digital Competition, Nature Visions Photography Expo, VisArts of Rockville, Fairfax County Council of the Arts Show (Unlocked), The Fraser Gallery International Photography Exhibition, Art At The Mill, Oatlands Plantation Art Show, Aldie Mill Art Show, and the Meadowlark Photography Expo. Sandi has sold many of her photographs to private, corporate and government clients, and does shows for businesses and other local events.
