Oct 24 – Architecture, Judge: Craig Shier

Architecture is defined as; “formation or construction resulting from or as if from a

conscious act.”

So photos of man made / constructed forms; i.e. building, bridges, etc…

Tip: In general, try to keep your straight lines straight and don’t let your buildings lean,

keep them “square”.

Oct. 10: LPC Speaker Night – Don Rosenberger “Rust and Ruins”

Date:   Thursday October 10, 2013
Time:   7:00 pm – 9:30 pm (GMT-05.00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)
Location:   GWU Ashburn Campus, 20101 Academic Way, Ashburn, VA 20147

 Artist’s Statement:

Photographers seem naturally drawn to decrepitude.  Whether your interest is in old cars, old trucks or old architecture, Don will show you how to shoot these environments in a creative manner.  During this presentation he will offer tips for better compositions and how to deal with some of the technical challenges you may have to overcome.

While many photographers love this subject matter, finding a great location to shoot decrepitude can be a challenge.  Unless you know the right person, these properties are usually off limits.  He will share a list of locations that offer easy access for a photographer and in addition, he will share his insights on how you can get permission to explore and create your own art in these great locations.

Artist’s Bio:

Don Rosenberger

Don first picked up a camera in his teenage years, shooting mostly black and white film and doing his own darkroom work.  His interests shifted to color film in his early twenties, then he did the unexpected, he quit photography.  There were a variety of reasons for this decision, but when he looks back he thinks he was lacking a certain maturity that was necessary to move forward in regard to the quality of his work.  With the advent of Digital Photography he started shooting again with a passion that had been missing in earlier years.   Today he is drawn to a variety of work, but he considers landscape photography to be the core of his work.  Being outside and often in remote locations gives him an appreciation for our natural world.  It is his hope that his images bring others to that same level of appreciation.

Today he shoots with everything from the iPhone, to high end DSLR’s and Infrared.  But he does not consider the camera that important, as it is just a tool to accomplish the photographer’s vision.

Don is the presentation manager for the Nature Visions Photography Expo.   Don is a former member of the Manassas Warrenton Camera Club and Co-Owner of Road Runner Photography Tours.

Photo Matting Workshop Scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013 – GWU room UPDATED INNOVT-121

UPDATED 10/1/2013:  ROOM IS INNOVATION 121, TIME 7:00 – 9:00 PM.  Innovation Hall is next to Exploration Hall. If you are driving down GW Blvd. away from the interchange where you come in Exploration is the first building on your left. Innovation Hall is the second on your left. 45085 University Drive, Ashburn, VA 20147

In follow up to discussion at the September competition meeting I’ve sent request to GWU for a room reservation for next Thursday evening, October 3, 2013. Several people wanted to participate in order to get some instruction on matting their images.

I’m asking for some of our experienced photographers to help out by attending and bringing along your mat cutting tools. I’m not sure whether the club has any mat board left over from the last time we made a purchase on behalf of the club. If there is none, we’ll send another note with suggestions on where you can procure materials. Locally, you can find 3/16 inch foam core backing board along with 4-ply white mat board at places like: Ben Franklin in Leesburg, Michael’s in Ashburn and other locations, A. C. Moore in Ashburn, Plaza Art in Fairfax, Blick (formerly Utrecht) in D.C., among others… If you want archival longevity be sure to get acid free materials. If it’s just short term display, standard board material is fine.

Please reply to this note via our Yahoo Group page indicating if you can attend and whether you’ll be “learner” or “teacher”! I will attend and bring my compact mat cutter (ok for 32 inch mats). We’ve had several people indicate they’ll attend so far.

Dova at GWU will let us know early in the week which room we will have and I’ll update the post with that info…

We’re not planning to order in pizzas or the like. If anyone wishes to meet up at the Rubino’s prior to our meeting at GWU, please feel free to leave a post on the club’s Yahoo Group page.

LPCA Year End Meeting – June 27, 2013

PLEASE NOTE: NO GENERAL CLUB MEETING JUNE 13; THERE WILL BE A CLUB BOARD/OFFICERS MEETING JUNE 13

The LPC 2012-2013 program and competition year has drawn to a close. Thanks to everyone for their active participation! Our summer schedule has one meeting each month, on the fourth Thursdays of June, July and August. Each of these are “member meetings” where we have not brought in outside speakers or judges.

Please plan to attend our June 27 year end meeting where all members attending will vote to select the LPC Photo of the Year. Tony Moringello posted the names of eligible photographers in his recent post to the LPC Yahoo Group. We’ll confirm the room number shortly and post it on our website.

Finally, the club is asking for all members to volunteer some time to help with the smooth functioning of the club. This can either be as a club board/officer or as someone who assists and shares in the duties. We’ve mentioned at recent club meetings that some current club officers either have already left or can’t continue with the position for next club year.

I am willing to serve another year as club president. Ginny Chandler has volunteered to take over treasurer and we thank her very much! And we give a big thanks to Michelle Moomey for handling treasurer for this club year. Thanks again to Patt Wattanasupt, Paul Wormeli and Jon Jelling for stepping up to assist covering webmaster duties along with Chad Blair.

Also thanks go to Ken Martin for leading Field Trips and Jennifer Arnett for Exhibitions. Jennifer has already moved out of state and Ken has served longer than two years already! We thank Art Hughes for representing LPC at Nature Visions, and since he’s moving out of state we need to replace him. Thanks to Jeff Schweiger who will assist with Nature Visions but we need another person to help.

Other vacant board/officer positions are:  Vice President; Newsletter Editor; Membership Coordinator.

So, you can see that we have many opportunities for you to volunteer! It may also be that the membership in general does not see value in a Newsletter for instance, and the club may want to consider eliminating that activity. Either way, we value your input and hope to have some good discussion during our June 27 meeting.

Meanwhile, Happy Shooting!!

May 23, 2013 LPC Competition – Theme: National Parks; Judge: Corey Hilz

May 23, 2013
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Location: GWU Ashburn Campus, Exploration Hall, Rm 121

National Parks may be searched at nps.gov, if your location of choice is in question.

We have also expanded to accept National Wildlife Reserves and National Seashores such as Chincoteague, VA. Realistically, unless you have some notable landmark that makes it obvious to the Judge as not being one of the above, it is really fairly open as a “Nature” theme.Note that for this competition, we have modified the competition rules to allow a max matted size of 20 inches, panoramas may be up to 24 inches on its longest edge. This is to allow those who participate in Nature’s Visions competition to be able to use the same printed photo for both competitions.

Nature’s Visions may have their own additional rules that we do not strictly follow, so keep those in mind if you do wish to participate in both;
You may find currently posted rules from last year here;

May 9, 2013 – Speaker Night – Jamie Konarski Davidson – Romance of the Rural Landscape

March 14, 2013
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Location: GWU Ashburn Campus, Exploration Hall, Rm 101

Jamie Konarski Davidson will be traveling up from North Carolina to be with us on May 9 at our next Speaker Meeting. Please mark your calendars as you will not want to miss Jamie’s program about the rural landscape!
Romance of the Rural Landscape. Life has changed over the years, and so has the landscape. As an outdoor and
nature photographer, Jamie Konarski Davidson sees the land through eyes that
grew up in a small town on the south shore of Long Island. Her father was
raised on a farm and was a master craftsman –  building and repairing all
sorts of boats. Visits to that farm and helping her father at the shop
throughout childhood imprinted an appreciation for working the land… and
the sea. An appreciation of a life of hard work and long hours still resides
within. There’s an allure that cannot be denied and compels Jamie to capture
the rural landscape while it still exists.Over the years the backroad and byways have been the route of choice. A
cross-country trip some years back included a rule: No interstate until
after dark. This rule provided abundant opportunities to see and photograph
remnants of the past, including old barns, gas tanks, country stores and so
much more. In the Carolinas the disappearing tobacco barns and family farms
have become a “must-shoot” subject.  In this program Jamie will share images
of the rural landscape captured primarily in the Southeast in infrared and
color and will share stories of these places and her passion for preserving
a part of the cultural history.

Bio Info:

Jamie Konarski Davidson is an award-winning freelance outdoor & nature
photographer with a passion for capturing and sharing the intimate moments
and beauty of the natural world on its own and as it blends with the “rest
of the world.” Her images range from macro and abstracts to intimate, grand
and rural landscapes. She connects with all things “old” and finds a special
beauty in decay and fading cultural lifestyles that resonate a life of hard
work. Through her company, New Life Photos, Jamie leads photo workshops
throughout the Southeast. Her goals are to encourage and inspire and help
people grow in their photography skills, connect with their subjects and see
beyond the obvious so that they can discover their own visual voice. Visit
www.newlifephotos.com to learn more.

Jamie is an active member of NANPA (National Association of Nature
Photography Association), serving as a Board member and the 2013 Summit
Chair, and CNPA (Carolinas Nature Photographers Association. She teaches
classes at ASAP Photo & Camera in Greenville, NC, and presents programs for
camera clubs and organizations throughout the Southeast.

Hope to see you all there!

Mar 28, 2013 LPC Competition – Theme: Macro/Closeup

Mar. 28, 2013
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Location: GWU Ashburn Campus, Exploration Hall, Rm 121

Just a quick reminder about the next competition meeting on March 28 7pm.

The theme is Macro and will be judged by Matthew Schmidt.
Macro is generally defined as being where the subject is recorded on a 1:1 ratio to the sensor size. For this competition we also allow close-up photography.
The subject should still be shown larger than normally viewed, and showing some detail or aspect not normally seen.
Matthew has this to add for clarification of what he will be looking for in this competition.
“I expect close-up photographs to be taken at, or very near, the closest focus distance of the lens.  Macro should produce an image that is at least the same size on the camera’s sensor as in real life (covering approximately 1″x1.5″ on a full-frame sensor).”
Bio for Matthew Schmidt;
Matt is a computer professional and an amateur photographer with a wide variety of photographic interests. During the winter months he often shoots indoors, mostly macro and still life, while in warmer months he shoots outdoors, enjoying landscapes, action and motorsports. Over the last several years he has been developing his skills with more artistic photographic interpretations, incorporating panning, multiple exposures and montages into his portfolio.
Although he works in a technical field, he has taken a great interest in art, studying the masters in painting and photography. He has begun to apply those interpretations, compositional and lighting techniques to his photography.

Matt is a member of NVPS, is a current board member and has held a board position for six of the last seven years. He is currently one of the webmasters and has been the Digital Competition Coordinator, PSA Rep, Co-VP for Competition and the Workshops, Education and Training Coordinator. Matt is a PSA member and has attended the PSA Image Analysis course and the JMCPA Judging Seminar numerous times (hoping to get it right at some point). The current NVACC website is designed and maintained by Matt.

Feb 28 – LPC Competition Theme – Portraits of People

Feb. 28, 2013
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Location: GWU Ashburn Campus, Exploration Hall, Rm 121

Feb 28 – Portraits of People

Judge – Shelley Miller

– A portrait of a living human person. i.e. no pets, statues,

photos, paintings, etc…

“A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other

artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its

expression is predominant. The intent is to display the

likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For

this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a

snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position.

A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter

or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the

subject with the viewer.”

Feb. 14, 2013 LPC Speaker Night – Cindi Hobgood – iPhonography

February 14 2013
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Location: GWU Ashburn Campus, Exploration Hall, Rm 101

On February 14, what a sweet deal, we have Cindi Hobgood’s program on iPhonography, hope you will come and hear what she has to say about shooting with “the camera you have with you” when you haven’t packed your gear. Android users will be able to translate many of the concepts and use same or similiar apps. This should be a great program from a very talented photographer!

She also plans to join us for dinner at Rubino’s Italian Restaurant in Ashburn Village before the meeting, it will be a great opportunity to meet her personally.

Cindi says:

“As a professional photographer, it’s liberating to put the big camera down and go out into the field traveling light. With it’s powerful apps and limitless possibilities, the iPhone is the perfect on-the-go creative tool. Sometimes I use it as a visual sketch pad, shoot a subject then back it up with the more complex optics on my Olympus OMD EM5 (a mirror less camera). Most days it’s the only camera I carry and there’s never a reason to miss a shot. iPhoneography has the complexity of photography, just in a new form. I’ll discuss shooting, various processing techniques and touch on its rapidly growing validity. In the last year my work has been exhibited in galleries in New York, Indianapolis, San Francisco and Los Angeles.”

Check out Cindi’s iPhone blog: www.theiphoneexpeditions.com
Also check out Cindi’s website: www.scoutphotoexpeditions.com

For more than 25 years, Cindi Hobgood traveled the world scouting film and television locations for major Hollywood studios… thus the name SCOUT Photo Expeditions!

Location scouting for the entertainment industry sent Cindi and her camera to more than 20 states and 10 countries where she found the perfect stage for the boy to kiss the girl, the battle to be waged, or the child to romp in the jungle. During the scouting process Cindi would photograph hundreds of locations in countless ways in order to translate a “sense of place” to the directors, production designers, and cinematographers on a given project. She would carefully annotate stunning locations, including compass readings, to establish the location for a perfect shot, and would provide insight on the quality and availability of light at given times of day.

Cindi scouted locations for more than 160 projects, including Separate But Equal, The Patriot, Jungle Book, The Notebook, Dear John, The Amazing Race and Wheel of Fortune; working for Paramount, Columbia Pictures, Disney, New Line Cinema, HBO, United Artists, Republic Pictures, and Sony among others. Cindi worked for some of the most highly recognized and established producers and directors in the industry, including Roland Emmerich, Spike Lee, Nick Cassavetes, Lasse Hallstrom, Sam Shepard, Nik Powell, Irwin Winkler, George Stevens, Jr., Stan Margulies, Evan Weinstein, and Bob Sofia.

The technical elements of film scouting and location management have helped Cindi hone her photography and leadership skills. She has the eye of a travel photographer, the quickness of a photojournalist, the artistry of a landscape photographer… and the ability to teach and translate what she sees to her colleagues and clients.

If you want to create something unique with your camera, spend the day with Cindi Hobgood.

…………..

An award-winning photographer, Cindi studied photography at UNC Chapel Hill in the Radio, Television, Motion Picture department. She went on to study at Savannah College of Art and Design and after Hurricane Hugo, headed to California to attend Brooks Institute of Photography.

Cindi Hobgood is a member of Destination DC (the Washington, DC Convention and Tourism corporation) and Women Photojournalists of Washington.

LPC Members Class on Color Management Sat Jan 19

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone was inspired by last night’s excellent lecture on the aesthetic aspects of creative print media. Not surprisingly, the topic of color management came up…albeit briefly.
