Speaker Night 2020-09-10: Geff Bourke – Black and White Photography

Thursday, September 10, 2020, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom meeting

LPC’s speaker for Sept 10th is Geff Bourke! This meeting is the first of our 20/21 season and we are so happy to have Geff with this masterful topic!

Black and White Photography is often forgotten in our digital color world of today. While not every image is a candidate for conversion to black and white, some images can be truly striking and powerful when rendered in this medium. This presentation focuses on how to produce strong black and white images, starting with learning to recognize what types of images make great black and white photographs. You will learn to recognize the conditions that will result in great images. You will also learn how to process black and white imagery with Photoshop and other software applications.

Photography has been a passion of Geff’s for nearly 3+ decades. Like most people, Geff started taking pictures of his vacations and of his family, with his very first camera, a Fuji XT605.

Geff definitely caught the photography bug and his interests branched out from family vacations to nature photography, such as landscapes, birds, and flowers; travel photography with the goal of capturing the culture of his destinations; and urban landscapes… street, people, and decay.

Since Geff started with film, he was compelled to learn every aspect of development and at one point had built his own darkroom so that he could process his images. Geff has, like many, converted to the digital format. For his nature photography, he is a purist… and uses post-processing software at a minimum. For all other subject matters, digital photography allows such a limitless freedom of expression. Each image can be manipulated in multiple ways to express a desired mood or state of mind. Although he doesn’t have his original camera, he does have a collection of antique cameras and often shoots film which he processes at home and then transfers to a digital image.

In college, he studied and obtained a degree in graphic arts. These studies aided him in developing perspective and have definitely impacted how he composes and processes his images. His work is a true expression of how he sees the world.

Speaker Night 2020-07-09: Bernard Chen – In the Moment of Inspiration

Thursday, July 9, 2020, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom meeting

Bernard Chen is a landscape photographer, based in Northern Virginia. He has unlocked a passion that combines a fascination with the visual image with a profound appreciation for the natural world. Almost by accident, his introduction to photography began in 2001, while working with Photoshop at the National Cancer Institute. He bought his first camera in 2009, and it was then that his joy and wonder at this art form started to take hold. Driven by a burning desire to become ever more accomplished, creative, and ambitious in his photography, he rapidly advanced his skills and began to discover the true potential of what he held in his hands.

From his site: “My work is born out of the harmony between my fascination with the visual image, and my wonder at the natural world. For the last decade, I have been captivated by the power of the camera to capture a moment, to stir up an emotion, and to open up a window onto the world that we all share. The camera is where our personal connection with nature meets our personal experience of art. My photography allows me to explore and encounter the world around me, but it is also a way for me to invite others to interact with nature, to experience it and to interpret it in their own unique way.”

Thursday, May 14, 2020, 7 PM – 9 PM
Zoom meeting

Long Exposure Photography
This presentation focuses on the techniques used to capture long exposures images and explores the artistic results of using long exposures to create unique imagery. We will cover the techniques and gear needed to shoot these types of images during the day, as well as how to capture images that take advantage of the time of day and available light. Learn how to manipulate clouds, water, and windy conditions when photographing landscapes scenery and use swipes to capture unique images with a sense of motion.

Our speaker: Denise Silva
Denise’s interest in photography started when her grandmother would share images from her travels to Egypt and Africa for safari. The evenings watching slideshows set the seed. 35 years later those seeds took root and inspired Denise to embrace photography and more specifically travel photography and Road Runner Photography Tours was born.

Her passion is to share her knowledge of photography, while introducing people to the amazing landscapes, wildlife, and people all over the world.

Theme: Portraiture
Judge: Marti Belcher

Theme Description: An image of one or more people.

About the judge:
(From her web site.)
My photography is simple and straightforward. I have a passionate interest and curiosity about people, world cultures and ideas. These are the forces that dominate my personal life and my photography. Actually I draw no distinction between my work and my personal life: they are one and the same.

I am an adventurer,
a lover of color, culture and the bewitching.

My path often takes me to Asia. It is a long way from a dairy farm in New York State but the dairy farm was a good place to start the journey. I learned to appreciate the every day events and the emotions that make us human. Today I photograph ordinary people and ordinary situations all over the planet Earth.

Agenda:
7pm: Sign in for a Meet and Greet for photographers and guests online
7:15pm: Competition begins

Reminder:
Competitions are held monthly on the 4th Thursday of each month of the club season (with some exceptions due to holidays) and are open to all paid LPC members. All interested non-members are welcome to visit, listen to and learn from the judges’ critiques, and join up if you would like to have the judges review your images! Judges are different each month and come from all over.

Lansdowne Woods
Theater Room
19375 Magnolia Grove Square, Lansdowne, Virginia 20176

LPC’s speaker for January 9th is Robert W. Fawcett.

From Robert’s Website:

Robert W. Fawcett (Bob) – Retired from 31 years of Government service, 26 of those years as a Forensic/Scientific/Technical Photographer. Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the interest in photography began early with Dad taking the family on those weekend drives through the country taking in the scenery down those back roads never explored. Little did I know back then that it would become a career that would take me on a journey to places around the globe. That journey began in Washington, DC in October of 1985.

As I continue the journey, the plan is to share with others the passion of photography and pass along the experiences from the days of film to the current digital world. From the beginning and up to this present time, I have always been a true believer of shooting in manual mode using the three thing of what photography is: ISO, Aperture, and Shutter. When mastered, one can be in total control of light and the vision in your mind to capture the creative images you desire.

Sunrise at Lincoln Memorial

This very cool moment happens a few times a year and it looks like the next one is September 22. We will be on the steps, no doubt scattered about for different perspectives/compositions.

Below is a summary of the time for sunrise and the position of the sun when it’s hitting the center of the memorial. An angle of about 5 degrees or less is ideal.

Sunday 09/22/2019
Sunrise: 06:55 AM 88.9 Deg / -0.2 Deg
Memorial: 07:03 AM 90.0 Deg / +1.0 Deg

Fall Equinox:
Monday 09/23/2019
Sunrise: 06:56 AM 89.4 Deg / -0.2 Deg
Memorial: 07:00 AM 89.9 Deg / +0.3 Deg

Remember when parking to obey signs and if needed, make a payment at the machines or using the DC parking app. If this particular shot doesn’t motivate, there are lots of sunrise opportunities, such as the Reflecting Pool, Vietnam Memorial, WWII, etc. Remember to share your images back to the group to inspire others!
